Biography
German film director, producer, screenwriter and author of several books including an autobiography.
He served until 1944 as a tank driver in Hitler's army, was wounded several times and was awarded the Order of Merit.
In 1947 he began his career as an actor and assistant director at a theatre in Coburg. In the following years he became known as a director of a number of feature films, theatre and television productions.
In 1983 he published the autobiography Angst zu atmen in which he describes his youth during the Nazi era.
He was married three times. He died on 16 June 2019, two days before his 95th birthday.
