Biography
Dutch professor of geography and ethnology, the son of an ironmonger. He studied in Leiden from 1832 to 1838. In 1854 he founded the Indian Society in Leiden. From 1864 to 1877 he was Professor of Ethnology for the Dutch East Indies, then, from 1877 to 1885 at the University of Leiden he was Associate Professor of history, literature, and antiquities of the peoples of the Indian archipelago and physical geography of the Indonesian archipelago. Veth was editor of the "Journal of the Dutch East Indies." He was the first president of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society (KNAG). He died in Arnhem on April 14, 1895.
