Biography
Belgian businessman, the son of François Vaxelaire and brother of Georges Vaxelaire. Heir to the Au bon marché department stores, founded by his father, he became the founder and chairman of Les Grands Magasins Au bon marché in 1930, chairman of the Congolese company of department stores Au bon marché (COBOMA) from 1928 to 1935, chairman of NV Prisunic-Uniprix-Priba, administrator of the General Savings and Retirement Fund (CGER) from 1929, Director of the Bank of Brussels in 1937 and President of the Chambre Syndicale des Grands Stores de Belgique.
He died on 11 March 1947 at age 76 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. His son François, 2nd Baron Vaxelaire, was president of the GIB Group and vice-president of the 1958 Universal Exhibition in Brussels.
