Biography
American musician known with his group as Ike and the Kings of Rhythm. In 1956 he married his band singer, Tina Turner and they put out "Ike and Tina Turner Revue" from 1956 to 1976. Their first record was "Fool in Love," 1960.
He and Tina had two boys along with his two boys from a former relationship. Ike beat up Tina for 16 years before she finally got out in 1978 after a particularly brutal beating in the back seat of a limo. She took years of abuse, Ike's coke habit and blatant infidelities, finally running away with 36 cents in her pocket. Ike sent his four boys to live with her along with their bedding and pets but no money.
Ike estimates that after that time, he blew about $11 million on "blow," snorting so much cocaine that he destroyed his nasal passages, until he was busted on a coke charge and spent two years behind bars. He was released in 1991 and began the long route of rebuilding his career. In 1995 he married Jeanette Bazell, and in 2001, he put out a critically acclaimed LP, "Here and Now."
Turner died on December 12, 2007 at his home in San Marcos, Calif., a San Diego suburb. He was 76. The cause of death was not given but his wife Jeanette noted that he had been suffering from emphysema. On January 16, 2008 the San Diego county Medical Examiner's office revealed that the cause of death was a cocaine overdose.
