Biography
American athlete, pro baseball player who made a solid reputation as baseball manager for the New York, Yankees.
He played for the Milwaukee Braves/Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Mets.
He joined the ranks of management, becoming manager of the Yankees in 1996. Under Torre's leadership, the Yankees achieved great success, making it to the playoffs each year, winning ten Eastern Division titles, six American league pennants and four World Series championships. Things went sour in fall 2007 when the Yankees were not performing up to the same level.
Owner George Steinbrenner, known for blunt sometimes mean-spirited comments threatened to fire Torre if the Yankees lost the divison. Instead of being fired outright, Torre was offered a one-year contract with many stipulations and incentives but Torre turned it down.
Torre was treated for prostate cancer in 1999. He's been married three times, first in 1963, second in 1968 (two daughters) and third in 1987 (one daughter).
With his third wife Ali, he established the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation to combat domestic violence.
