Dutch television presenter.
Van der Togt was born in Maastricht and moved to Heemstede in 1953. After the MULO in Heemstede and the secondary hotel school in Tegernsee, Geramany , Van der Togt had several jobs in the catering industry as a waiter. He then became a steward at Lufthansa , but was fired for hashish smuggling from India . He was also a guide on tour boats.
In 1974 he moved to Amsterdam and in 1975 got a relationship with photographer Chris-Paul Stapels (b. 1942, Bandung). Het became presenter of the Dutch version of Wheel of Fortune (Rad van Fortuin, 1990-98). June 1998, shortly after the dismissal at RTL, this relationship broke up. Around april/may 1999, Stapel died of AIDS .
In November 2007, Van der Togt admitted in an open-hearted interview in the magazine Nieuwe Revu that he was an alcoholic and a heavy smoker. In addition, he said in the past that he had experimented extensively with all kinds of drugs. He was also open-hearted about loneliness and homosexuality .
In 2010 Van der Togt was a guest in the program De Wereld Draait Door, where he clearly said he would no longer aspire to a television career. In 2011 he played himself as a guest in the VARA-series Dr. Ellen. As a patient of Dr. Ellen, Van der Togt talked about his drinking problem and about the separation anxiety of his dog Hero.
In April 2013 he was suffering from prostate cancer. He had just gotten rid of his alcohol addiction. By the end of July 2013, the cancer had disappeared after seven radiation treatments. In October 2013 Van der Togt, after having lived in Amsterdam for 40 years, moved to the small village of Achlum in Friesland .
