German food chemist, an expert in the field of water chemistry, who dealt with the aggressive carbonic acid and with iron removal and demanganization. From him the Tillmans formula was developed. With this formula, the corresponding free carbonic acid is calculated, which is necessary for a content of calcium ions in the water, so that no calcium carbonate precipitates.
Another focus of Tillmans' work was ascorbic acid (vitamin C), whose purification, properties and purpose in foodstuffs occupied him. His name is still known today through the "Tillmans reagent", which can be used to quantitatively detect ascorbic acid. Tillmans also succeeded in detecting trifructosan in rye.
He died on 2 February 1935 in Buchschlag, aged 58.
