Proprietor of the Scottish newspaper and publishing company D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd.
The company was founded in 1905 and Thomson became the sole proprietor of the Dundee based company on the death of his brother in 1917.
He was vitriolically opposed to Winston Churchill who stood for election in Dundee in 1922. Churchill lost the election and Thomson refused to mention his name in any of the Thomson publications until Churchill became Prime Minister, at which point reference to him became unavoidable.
Thomson was also vehemently anti-union: after the general strike of 1926, printing union members were allowed to re-join the newspaper and publishing company only after signing a document to say that they had left the striking union.
