Biography
American hamburger entrepreneur who founded Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburger chain of fast-food restaurants. Representing his chain, he was always pictured in a short-sleeved shirt and red tie, looking pudgy, clean and fatherly with his spectacles and pleasant smile. Thomas became a familiar figure when he began pitching his burgers in TV commercials in 1989.
Dave started work at age 12 at the counter. In 1956, he was working at a BBQ when his boss bought a Kentucky Fired Chicken franchise. Six years later, Thomas took over four failed KFCs. Bringing them into the black, he sold them back to the founder in 1968 for $1.5 million, his first million at age 35. A year later, he opened his own hamburger store, naming it after his daughter Wendy. The chain now has 6,000 restaurants worldwide. In 1969, Thomas acquired Canadian-based Horton's, a coffee and baked goods chain with more than 2,000 stores. The two have combined sales of more than $8 billion.
Dave was an adopted child and his philanthropy is for adoption organizations. The profits from his two books, "Well Done!" and "Dave’s Way" go to the foundation.
Thomas died of liver cancer on 1/02/2002, Fort Lauderdale, FL He had been taking kidney dialysis for nearly a year and had quadruple heart bypass surgery in 1996.
