Biography
German architect and university teacher, and a member of the architects associations Der Ring and the Deutschen Werkbundes. From 1928 he was a member of the Darmstädter Sezession.
Soeder developed a concept that made craftsmanship the basis of artistic design, following experiments made at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau between 1919 and 1932. For his concept, which he implemented as director of the school from 1948, he created the name "Werk-Kunst-Schule" (Werkkunstschule). This term was adopted by 18 other German (former) arts and crafts schools temporarily, before they further developed from the early 1970s into colleges and art schools.
Soeder established a school in Wiesbaden that was committed to "social-ethical responsibility". His work focused on "the practical use of formal and material solidity". One of Soeder's pupils in Wiesbaden was the industrial designer Dieter Rams, who repeatedly referred to the innovative teaching and training concepts of Hans Soeder in lectures and writings.
Hans Soeder died on 4 August 1962 in Basel, Switzerland, aged 70.
