Biography
Norwegian film director, journalist, and writer. For some periods he lived in the US, Great Britain, and Sweden (during World War II). Skouen was a sailor from 1933-34, later writing fiction about being young and at sea. He started working at the newspaper Dagbladet in 1935. He became a journalist in 1946, working for VG 1947-57, and Dagbladet 1971-1995.
Skouen had a daughter who was diagnosed with autism. In his column "Ytring" ('Statement') he spent a lot of time addressing the rights of people with disabilities and how they were treated in society. Skouen argued that the special schools did more harm than good.
In 1958 his film "Ni Liv" ('Nine Lives') received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Skouen died on 24 May 2003, aged 89.
