Biography
British actress onscreen from 1944.
She was age 17 when David Lean cast her as Estella in "Great Expectations," with a prior debut at 13 in a British comedy. By the time she was 21, she was one of the most popular stars in England and on her way to the American stage.
With more than 50 films, she was nominated for as Oscar as Ophelia in Olivier's great 1948 film version of "Hamlet" and nominated again for "The Happy Ending," 1969.
Simmons was married to Stewart Granger 1950-60; one daughter, and married to Richard Brooks 1960-77; one daughter.
The lovely actress died of lung cancer at her Santa Monica, CA home on January 22, 2010.
