American professional baseball player, considered by many to be the greatest third baseman in Major League Baseball history. Schmidt was a three-time National League Most Valuable Player and the Most Valuable Player of the 1980 World Series.
He ranks seventh on the all-time home run list with 548. He also led the NL in home runs a record eight times (making him second only to Babe Ruth in that achievement). He also won ten Gold Glove Awards, more than any NL third baseman in history. In 1983, Philadelphia fans voted him the finest Philadelphia Philly of all time. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on 30 July 1995.
On 13 June 1995, Schmidt joined the SportsLine USA Board of Advisors, joining NFL Hall of Fame legend Joe Namath and former football star Jack Kemp in serving as advisors to the online service that is devoted exclusively to sports information, entertainment and merchandise. He serves as the company's primary baseball spokesman.
