Biography
German chemist and professor whose field of expertise was various areas of organic chemistry. Scheibler was able to show that the ichthyol oils used since ancient times for rheumatic diseases contain alkyl thiophenes as an active ingredient. He isolated from ichthyol oil a preparation contained therein 12% by weight of thiophene sulfur, which was sold under the trade name Eutirsol. Further research was devoted to thiophenisoligens of sulfanilic acid and corresponding sulfonamides.
Helmuth Scheibler devoted himself to the chemistry of divalent carbon. In the isocyanides Scheibler recognized the Schiff's bases, and in noxious acid (at that time falsely formulated as HONC) the oxime of carbon monoxide. In 1960, Helmuth Scheibler was retrospectively characterized by S. Skell as a "pioneer of carbene chemistry".
He died on 13 April 1966 in Berlin, aged 84.
