Biography
French archivist, historian and centenarian.
He was the chief archivist in the judicial section of the National Archives, in charge of the archives of Chatelet and the house of auditors.
A major scholar of the twentieth century, both personally and in an institutional role, he co-founded the International Committee on Palaeography in 1953, and was a prolific author of a bibliography on this subject.
Charles Samaran had three daughters. He was the son-in-law of flautist Paul Taffanel, founder of l'École française de flûte (French school of the flute).
He died on 15 October 1982 in Nogaro, aged 102.
