American infamous arsonist, convicted in 1983 of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable, that of setting his son on fire. During a custody battle with his wife, he gave his son a sleeping pill and then deliberately started the blaze that badly disfigured the young boy. Rothenberg fled from Orange county but was picked up in San Francisco, charged and convicted of attempted murder and arson with great bodily injury. He served 6 1/2 years in prison and was paroled to Oakland in 1990.
In 1996, Rothenberg was arrested but acquitted of charges that he shot and wounded a 47-year-old man in a low-rent Oakland motel. Since 1997 he has been going by the name of Charlie Charles and working at a local San Francisco International House of Pancakes. He was picked up by police on 6/18/2001 on suspicion of starting a fire that morning to the apartment door of a neighbor, where an inflammable liquid had been torched. Investigation linked him to the theft and use of credit cards. Officers found a handgun in his home, a felony due to his prior convictions. As this arrest is his third strike, he could be given 25 years prison if convicted.
