Biography
Australian visual/performance artist who works under the name of his alter ego "(Her Divine Holiness) Pope Alice." Roberts work draws on his rural Catholic upbringing and homosexuality. His works are rich in religious iconography and often graphic in its depiction of gay sexuality. He has publicly accused other artists, such as the French gay duo, "Pierre et Gilles," of copying his work without proper credit. A social critic in his art, is work includes depictions of such people as artist Frida Kahlo, outlaw Ned Kelly, and religious figures Jesus and his mother. He often appears as the Virgin Mary, holding the dead (female) body of Christ. His work has been exhibited in Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art.
When Roberts makes appearances, he becomes Pope Alice, dressed in flowing white robes, a beehive headdress and dark glasses.
