Biography
American sociologist, educator, and best-selling commentator on American society, he was a major public intellectual best known for his 1950 book The Lonely Crowd: A Study of the Changing American Character. The huge success of the book put Riesman on the cover of Time magazine in 1954, making him the first social scientist to receive this honour.
He taught at what is now the University at Buffalo Law School and at the University of Chicago, and became a university professor at Harvard. He died on 10 May 2002 at age 92 in Binghamton, New York.
