Biography
German entertainer, comedian, couplet singer and stage and film actor, who became the forerunner of the classic stand-up comedian. In numerous short films, especially during the First World War, he played a stiff, funny old guy in old-fashioned make-up, who remembered, recalling long-forgotten times, consciously and without reservation of the ridicule revealed.
Shortly after the end of the First World War, this kind of humour had survived and more subtle comedians - especially those from abroad such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton - dominated the German screen. Rieck thus returned in the 1920s to his work on stage and worked as a comedian at Berlin's Komische Oper and at the New Operetta Theater in Leipzig. He died on 7 November 1924, aged 48.
