Portugal ecclesiastic, the titular head of the Roman Catholic Church in Portugal, he was born the only child of a poor family. After his father died, young Antonio, age 10, was sent to a seminary in Braga. He remained there until his ordination as a priest in 1953. He earned his doctorate in 1959 and began teaching theology and writing theological books. From 1959-1967 he was featured on a television show where he could educate his audience on Catholic views and practices. He was appointed Assistant Bishop of Braga in 1967. Two years later he was transferred to Lisbon where he served as Assistant Bishop until 1971. In 1971 he was named Patriarch of Lisbon and was elevated to Cardinal in 1973. He died of cancer on 24 March 1998 in Lisbon, aged 69.
