On 3/21/1940, he was made President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Within three months, due to political stress, Reynaud resigned on 16 June 1940. He was arrested in September by Pétain's government and sentenced to life in prison in October 1941. With the Allies' victory, he was released in 1945 and became one of the main witnesses against Pétain at the Marshal's trial.
