Biography
Italian vulcanologist who successfully campaigned for the construction of the first volcanological institute in Europe, making the University of Catania the only university in Europe that had the purpose of studying volcanoes. The Etna volcanological observatory was erected on Mount Etna at 2941 m. and the Casa Cantoniera hut was rebuilt as a volcanic station at 1881 m. In addition to monitoring the activity of the volcano, the problem of protecting the two structures against the eruptive activity of Etna was addressed.
He died in Transacqua in 1955.
