Biography
French writer and soldier.
His principal works were known as "Animal Stories" due to their rooting in the flora and fauna.
In 1910 he won the Prix Goncourt for his novel "De Goupil à Margot".
He was killed in action aged 33, on 8 April 1915, whilst serving with the French Army near Marchéville-en-Woëvre during the First World War. His body has never been found.
Pergaud's work is still very popular in France, with more than thirty editions of "La Guerre des boutons" ("War of the Buttons"), written in 1912. It was adapted to film five times.
