Biography
Italian-German phoneticist and professor at the University of Hamburg. In 1913, he organized the first International Congress of Phonetics in Hamburg. The following year he acquired German nationality. In 1934 he founded a boarding school for children with speech problems. Panconcelli-Calzia regarded phonetics as a pure science without any reference to linguistic-scientific phonology. Only his pupil of Otto von Essen brought both views together.
Panconcelli-Calzia died on 25 October 1966 in Hamburg, aged 88.
