Biography
Spanish philosopher, social critic and essayist, one of the most influential intellectuals of his time.
A graduate from Madrid, he studied in Germany, returning to become the Professor of Metaphysics at Madrid University 1910-36. He founded several periodicals and was quite liberal in politics.
He lived abroad 1936-45, returned to Madrid and founded the Institute of Humanities, 1948. Expounding a form of existentialism, his collected works were published 1946-47. He was probably best known for "The Revolt of the Masses," 1930.
Jose married Rosa Spottorno-Topete and they had three children. He died 10/18/1955 in Madrid.
