Biography
Writer, literary critic, historian and Peruvian university professor.
He was a professor at the St. Andrew's College and his alma mater, the University of San Marcos, having to its position the chairs of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature. He was Director of the Program in Literature and Linguistics of San Marcos. Visiting professor at the universities of New York, Bonn and Grenoble. Married to the painter and writer Carlota Núñez Carvallo who had seven children. In 1967 he was appointed Director of the National Library of Peru, accounting for labor intensive publishing Peruvian classics as well as the renewal of their service and the completion of its construction,but he was fired and it was left unfinished. He was also Director of the Peruvian Academy of Language (1988-1991) and was a member of the National Academy of History. He was President of Centro Cultural Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and member of the National Commission for the celebration of the V Centenary of the Discovery of America.
He died in Lima on 29 August 2013.
