Biography
Algerian-born French swimmer and water polo player. An Olympic athlete in 1936 and again in 1948, he held many titles in France for swimming in a variety of events, including the 100m and 200m freestyle in 1941. In December 1943 he, his wife and their young child were arrested by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz along with other Jews. His wife and daughter died there a month later. In 1946 he broke the world's record in the 3 x 100 freestyle competition.
He died in 1983. Ten years later he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. A documentary entitled "Alfred Nakache, the Swimmer of Auschwitz" was released in 2001..
