Biography
Dutch author and painter of landscapes and animals.
His father Jan ter Meulen (11 Oct 1809-1895) was a manufacturer of white lead in a local family business. His mother was Christina Henrietta Bohn (b. 22 Jan 1806, Haarlem). Frans was the second of four children. The family was upper middle class.
Frans or François Pieter ter Meulen first studied Letters in Leiden. He published about painting in the leading Dutch cultural magazine De Gids.
After 1874 he went to painting. He was a pupil of H. and J. J. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen and was influenced by leading figures of the Hague School. His favourite themes were landscapes and sheep.
He married 6 July 1881 Augusta Wijnaendts (b. 5 Sept 1846, Voorburg). On 3 December 1884 the couples only child Jacob was born. Jacob ter Meulen would become a famous jurist, pacifist and Librarian of the Peace Palace at The Hague.
He died 10 June 1927 in The Hague.
