French biochemist known for founding the Institut Mérieux in 1897 in Lyon. The complex included a private mansion built by his brother. This institute is now called Sanofi Pasteur and belongs to the pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis.
In 1894, he worked at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, where he became Emile Roux's personal assistant.
Marcel Mérieux studied tuberculin (bacillus Koch) and diphtheria serum. In addition, he was the first to put in place the anti-tetanus serum on which his son Charles Mérieux later worked. After the war, he acquired land in Marcy-l'Étoile, and used his horses for the manufacture of his anti-foot-and-mouth serum.
He died on 13 August 1937, aged 67.
