Mexican pioneering journalist, poet and historian, who started in journalism in 1890 writing for the newspapers El Faro, El Horizonte and La Nueva Era, having founded the first two. He was also the editor of Pimienta y Mostaza, an influential weekly newspaper focusing on the centuries-old peninsular lifestyle.
He worked for 16 years, since 1896, for Revista de Mérida (Mérida Magazine) of which he was director and owner in the last years of his employ, until he was stripped of it. He then founded Revista de Yucatán (Yucatan Magazine) in 1912, a newspaper that was censored, seized and closed by the government of Yucatan, on several occasions.
Finally, in 1925, he established, Diario de Yucatán which he directed until his death, not without serious difficulties and closures caused by the government of the state of Yucatan. Throughout his life, his journalistic heritage was taken away from him seven times and seven times he resurfaced in defiance to resume his endeavours.
He died in Merida, Yucatan on 12 December 1961, aged 89.
