Biography
Bill McLaren was a Scottish rugby union commentator, teacher, journalist and one time rugby union player. Until his retirement in 2002, he was known as 'the voice of rugby'. Renowned throughout the sport, his enthusiasm and a memorable turn of phrase endeared him to all rugby fans.
During his final commentary, Wales v Scotland in 2002, the crowd sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and one Welsh supporter displayed a banner claiming "Bill McLaren is Welsh".
He died in the town of his birth on 19th January 2010 of Alzheimer's disease, although in his working career he had been renowned for his excellent memory.
