Biography
American athlete, a pro basketball player for the New York Knicks and the Baltimore Bullets.
He and his brother Dick are the only two brothers in the Basketball Hall of Fame; Al was inducted as a coach in 1992.
Drafted by the New York Knicks in 1951 and played for four seasons, three of which were years in which the team made the play-offs.In September 1954 he was traded to the Baltimore Bullets.
He transitioned to coaching in 1955, beginning as an assistant coach at Dartmouth. After a nine-year stint at Belmont Abbey college (from 1957-1964), he landed the coaching job that would lead to his Hall of Fame status--head coach at Marquette University. He retired after the 1977 season and became a broadcaster/sports announcer.
He died from leukemia on January 26, 2001 in Milwaukee, WI.
