Biography
American cowboy singer and writer of thousands of country-western songs. Many of his topics came from the headlines of current news, such as Watergate, the sitting president and scientific breakthroughs such as Barney Clark with a mechanical heart. With his group, The Swift Cowboys, he recorded for Decca, Savoy and other labels.
Singing pro on the radio from the time he was 16, Dave worked as a migrant worker and rode the freight trains, singing for food at restaurants until he had his first success at 21. He served in WW II as an infantryman for two years and went to Hollywood to play in a couple B movie westerns. He hosted a TV show for seven years and sold real estate for a steady job. After his wife of nearly 35 years was killed in a fire, Dave moved to Nashville, then for California.
McEnery died of a kidney ailment on 1/15/2002 in San Antonio, age 87.
