Biography
American screenwriter and noted family, who spells her last name slightly differently from her father and brother. One of five kids of Richard Matheson, she spent much of her youth in Los Angeles where her dad was West Coast bureau chief for Newsweek magazine. Family friends included Francis Ford Coppola and Melissa began work as his assistant on the production of "Godfather Part II," 1974. Coppola saw some of Melissa's work and assigned her to write the script of "The Black Stallion," and following that, "E.T. The Extraterrestrial," 1982. The film was a huge success.
Melissa met Harrison Ford on the set of Apocalypse Now, 1979, where she was script supervisor. They lived together for several years until March of 1983 when they quietly went down to the courthouse to get married. By 1995 they were living in Jackson Hole, WY with son Malcolm, eight and daughter Georgia, five. Her film, "The Indian in the Cupboard" opened that year. In November 2000, she and Ford separated. With their usual lack of fanfare, they quietly reconciled about February 2001.
Mathison died from neuroendocrine cancer on 4 November 2015. She was 65.
