Biography
French military man, a General and African explorer.
The leader of a French expedition to claim the Sudan, he set out for Fashoda and occupied the town on 9/19/1898.
He is noted for tracing the Niger River to its source and explored the region from the Niger to Tengrela. Marchand retired in 1919 and received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1920.
He died on 13 January 1934.
