Egyptian-American actor most acclaimed for playing superstar Freddie Mercury in the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, for which he won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Actor, along with the Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA Award.
His breakthrough lead role was as computer hacker Elliot Alderson in the critically acclaimed USA Network television series Mr. Robot (2015-), for which he won a Critics' Choice Award and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Malek has acted in supporting roles for film and television series including the Night at the Museum trilogy (2006-2014), The Pacific (2010), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012), and the dramatic film Short Term 12 (2013), among others.
Malek was born to Egyptian immigrant parents. His father sold insurance and his mother is an accountant. Malek was raised in his family's Coptic Orthodox Christian faith, and grew up speaking colloquial Egyptian Arabic at home until the age of four. Malek has an identical twin brother who is younger by four minutes; he is an ESL and English teacher. Malek's older sister is an ER doctor.
During his acceptance speech for Breakthrough Performance of the Year at the 30th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, Malek confirmed his relationship with his Bohemian Rhapsody co-star Lucy Boynton.
The actor has lent his support to charities, such as the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation, the ACLU and the (RED) organization. He is an ambassador to raise awareness and funds to help eliminate HIV/AIDS.
