Biography
American politician, whose political career ended in scandal.
Lukens was a member and then President of the conservative Young Republicans organization. He won election to the US House of Representatives in 1966. In 1970 he made an unsuccessful bid for governor of Ohio. He then served in the Ohio State Senate until 1987 when he was once again elected to the US Congress.
In May 1989 he was convicted for trying to have sex with a teenager and he resigned from his Congressional seat in 1990. He served a 30-day prison sentence in 1991 but his legal troubles did not end there. Five years later he was convicted of accepting bribes and was sentenced to another 30 months in federal prison.
He was married and divorced with no children. He survived a bout with throat cancer in the 1980s and it was cancer that took his life on 22 May 2010 in Dallas, TX, aged 79.
