Biography
French endocrinologist involved in the development of anti-diabetic sulfa drugs.
The discovery of oral antidiabetic drugs dates back to the second half of the 19th century. The hypoglycaemic effect of certain antibacterial sulphonamides was shown in 1942 by Marcel Janbon in Montpellier and proved experimentally by Auguste Loubatières.
It was in 1942, in Montpellier, that Janbon and his team discovered the hypoglycemic effects of a sulfonamide. Loubatières then demonstrated the need for the presence of a pancreas for these effects to be exerted.
He died on 9 January 1977, aged 64, in Montpellier.
