Biography
German art director, sometimes credited as Herbert O. Phillips, who rose to prominence during the Weimar Republic in the early sound era. The Jewish Lippschitz was forced to leave Germany following the rise of the Nazi Party to power in 1933. This largely halted his career although he was sporadically involved in films in a variety of different countries.
In June 1939 Lippschütz settled in the USA and henceforth changed his name to Herbert O. Phillips. In 1945 Phillips/Lippschütz became an American citizen.
In 1962 he returned to Germany and settled in Munich, where he died of a pulmonary embolism on 13 September 1972 in the Schwabing hospital at age 68.
