French physician and biologist.
He spent his professional studying the relationship between carcinogenesis and hormones.
In 1932 he described his experimental success in inducing breast cancer in mice which had been repeatedly injected with female sex hormones. By studying several generations of mice, he also argued that certain strains were more genetically susceptible to tumor formation.
From 1951 until his retirement in 1954, he served at the College de France professor of experimental medicine where courses are devoted to cancer. In July 1957 he was invited member of the first conference of the Pugwash Movement who fight for peace and against the weapons of mass destruction. After the death of Justin Godart in 1956, he assumed the presidency of the National League against Cancer and this until his death by defenestration on 16 December 1971. He left three letters to explain his suicide, including one for L'Express in which he said "I made a mistake in judgment recently that I can not survive. "
