On 5 April 1924, he was ordained as a priest. Until 1926 he worked as a chaplain in Bernkastel/Mosel, then in Bad Neuenahr. At the same time he continued his theological studies at the University of Bonn focusing on German and French literature. In August 1933 he was assigned the position of chaplain in Saarbrücken, but for health reasons and because he had now begun to increasingly devote himself to writing, he retired.
