Biography
American athlete, pro-basketball player from 1954-1965, nicknamed "Red" for his red hair.
After 12 years of playing the sport, he became the Chicago Bulls' coach, the first coach in the franchise's history, and was named NBA Coach of the Year for that first year, 1966-67. When he retired from coaching, he became the team's business manager and media analyst for 33 years more.
He and his wife whom he married in 1954, had five children. Their oldest son John Jr., died at age three of meningeal encephalitis. Later they cared for their three nieces whose parents had both died. One of the girls was later murdered while she was in college.
His wife died in 2000 and he died on February 26, 2009 of prostate cancer.
