Biography
Japanese novelist and short story writer whose lyrical prose works won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968, the first Japanese author to receive the award. His works have enjoyed broad international appeal and are still widely read. Kawabata apparently committed suicide on 16 April 1972 (aged 72) by gassing himself, but a number of close associates, including his widow, consider his death to have been accidental.
