American-born financial guru designated as the Interim Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Stability on October 6, 2008. Kashkari was nicknamed "The $700 billion man" when Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson (under George W. Bush) put Kashkari in charge of the bailout designed to stem the huge credit crisis in late 2008. Kashkari will continue in h is role as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Economics and Development with some modification in his responsibilities.
He joined the Treasury Department in July 2006 as Senior Advisor to Paulson, to work on the energy security plan and liaise with India. Like Paulson, Kashkari had prior experience at Goldman, Sachs & Co. . Kashkari had prior research and development experience at TRW.
His parents are both scientists. His father, a Presidential award recipient for his work in bringing water to African villages, has a doctorate in engineering. His mother worked as a pathologist.
