German veterinary surgeon who introduced the histological investigation of pathological changes in veterinary medicine. Together with Kurt Degen, Joest discovered the Joest-Degen inclusion body in 1909 which helped in the later discovery of Borna disease.
Joest was the founder of the standard textbook of veterinary medicine, which was later published by Johannes Dobberstein, the original four-volume and later seven-volume manual of the special pathological anatomy of domestic animals.
He died on 7 July 1926 in Leipzig, aged 53.
