American baseball player, coach and team manager, who hit his career-high 48 home runs with the Washington Senators during the 1969 season.
All-American in both baseball and basketball during his college years at Ohio State, Howard participated in several Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival Tournaments, and still holds two rebounding records. In 1960, the 6'8" 275-lb. Howard played with the Dodgers, batting .268 and capturing Rookie of the Year honors. In 1964, he was traded to the Senators, staying in Washington until the early 1970s.
Warm and upbeat in nature, the man nicknamed "The Capital Punisher" and "Hondo" easily made the transition into coaching, first for the Brewers, and later for the Mariners. Throughout the 1980s, he worked as both coach and manager for several teams.
He injured his back during 1974, striking out during his first game for Taiheiyo in Japan and ending his playing career.
