German professional footballer, member of the team winning the 1974 world championship. In the final of the 1975 European Cup, against Leeds United, he suffered a knee injury from which he never fully recovered. Immediately after retiring, Hoeneß was appointed commercial/general manager of Bayern Munich, overseeing a period in which the club enjoyed continued sporting success, winning the Intercontinental Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, 15 German leagues and seven domestic cups (before his arrival, the club had won only seven major trophies in its history). In 2009 he changed from being top club manager (CEO) into a role as club president.
In 2013 he admitted to tax evasion via a Swiss bank account. On 10 March 2014, he went on trial and has admitted to defrauding Germany's tax authorities. He was subsequently found guilty and, on 13 March 2014, sentenced to three and a half years in prison.
