American painter, illustrator, muralist and teacher, whose works are held in the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and many other major museums. Social commentary was the backbone of Hirsch's art, especially works depicting civic corruption and racial injustice.
During World War II, his image of a smiling and waving soldier shipping out, Till We Meet Again (1942), was the most popular War Bond poster.
Hirsch was a founding member of Artists Equity, an organization modeled on Actors Equity, created to protect the rights of visual artists.
He died on 21 September 1981 in New York City, aged 71.
