American journalist and publisher who became chairman and CEO of Time Inc. (1960–1980), also known for his philanthropy, for organizations including the New York Public Library. He was President of the Inter American Press Association (1961–1962).
In 1946, aged just 30, he was named publisher of Life magazine; later, as CEO, he had to close it down (in 1972). In 1974 he created People magazine, which rapidly became a great asset.
He was married three times and had three children. He died on 6 July 2003 in Darien, Connecticut, aged 87.
The Institute of International Education's Andrew Heiskell Award is named for him.
