American activist known as Granny D. This past freezing winter (1999), in spite of her 89 years and health concerns, she walked and skied across the USA for campaign finance reform. She left Los Angeles on 1/01/1999 on foot, and walking ten miles per day, arrived at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. on 2/29/2000. Her goal was to show Members of Congress that people care about campaign finance reform, walking in spite of her arthritis and emphysema and by talking to as many people as she could along her way. She walked through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Washington. D.C. When she arrived at the Capitol, 2,200 people were walking with her. She hopes that her effort will encourage people to contact their representatives and say that they also care about campaign finance reform.
She died on March 9, 2010 in Dublin, New Hampshire age 100.
